Kaydon bearing FAQs

I'd like to find out what kind of lubricant, if any, is applied to a standard Reali-Slim® bearing.

What are the operating temperature limits of a Reali-Slim® bearing?

"JU" bearings are supplied prelubricated and greased from the factory. Is this lubricant rated as food grade?

While reviewing the information on the Kaydon website for a particular bearing (MTE-324), I see stated a few places to refer to the "owner's manual". Is this referring to a "manufacturers owner's manual" or a supplier-generated "owner's manual"?

When using slewing ring bearings, the Kaydon website states to lubricate at a given interval based on cycle of usage. Can we get information on the specific type of lubricant to use as well as a specific procedure for lubrication?

What type of lubricant and how much of it is there in a MTO-170T slewing ring bearing as it comes from the factory?

I am looking for information on the RK6-16P1Z, -N1Z, -E1Z slewing ring bearings. I need to know if I can mount these "upside-down?" For example, can I mount a RK6-16N1Z bearing with the internal gear on the bottom and the flange up?

How corrosion resistant are your slewing ring/turntable bearings? Will they stand up to the elements outdoors (ice, snow, water)? Do you offer them in stainless?

What are the recommended shaft and housing dimensions for a preloaded back-to-back set of angular contact bearings?

How are bearing pass frequencies determined?

How do I obtain Reali-Design® software?

Do the seals on the Kaydon slewing ring bearings resist a corrosive environment such as part of a permanent fixture mounted on the deck of a ship?

What is the standard internal clearance of a KB060XP0, Type X Reali-Slim® bearing? How is this measured?

When a Reali-Slim® bearing outer race is fixed, how much deviation can I measure at the bore when rotating the inner race? I am trying to determine how much the axis shifts (not tilt) relative to the axis of the outer race during normal operation.

Can you please describe the importance of the 'rotating shaft' and 'stationary shaft' columns in the "Recommended Fits for Reali-Slim® Bearings" section of the Kaydon Reali-Slim® bearing catalog?

I'd like to find out what kind of lubricant, if any, is applied to a standard Reali-Slim® bearing.

Unsealed bearings are supplied with a coating of preservative-type lubricating oil for the prevention of corrosion during storage. Kaydon recommends that this preservative be removed with clean petroleum solvent prior to lubrication. If the lubricant is not removed, the compatibility of the lubricant with the preservative oil must be confirmed. An option is to have Reali-Slim® bearings factory lubricated with commercial grease or oil selected by the customer in order to facilitate installation.

Sealed bearings are also available and are packed approximately one-third full with a multi-purpose industrial grease. Exterior surfaces are given a light coating of the same lubricant for protection during storage in the original package.

What are the operating temperature limits of a Reali-Slim® bearing?

Standard Reali-Slim® bearing materials are capable of withstanding temperatures of -65°F to 250°F. When operating at low or high extremes of temperature consult with a lube supplier regarding acceptable bearing performance.

"JU" bearings are supplied prelubricated and greased from the factory. Is this lubricant rated as food grade?

No—The standard grease in a JU bearing contains a synthetic oil with a lithium based thickener. Kaydon can prefill bearings with any food or specialty grease if required on a custom basis.

When we mention an owner's manual in our literature, that is aimed at the end user and is referring to one provided by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for the product in which the Kaydon bearing is installed.

When using slewing ring bearings, the Kaydon website states to lubricate at a given interval based on cycle of usage. Can we get information on the specific type of lubricant to use as well as a specific procedure for lubrication?

Selection of the lubricants used in a slewing ring bearing and the integral open gear is dependent on the application. The designer of the equipment is responsible for selecting an appropriate lubricant and frequency of re-lubrication. Some of the more commonly used lubricants are shown on page 44 of the Kaydon Slewing Ring/Turntable Bearings Catalog 390.

What type of lubricant and how much of it is there in a MTO-170T slewing ring bearing as it comes from the factory?

Kaydon slewing ring bearings are pre-lubricated with a lithium based mineral oil grease conforming to NLGI No. 1 consistency with extreme pressure additives, unless specifically noted otherwise. Catalog slewing ring bearings are all packed full with grease.

I am looking for information on the RK6-16P1Z, -N1Z, -E1Z slewing ring bearings. I need to know if I can mount these "upside-down?" For example, can I mount a RK6-16N1Z bearing with the internal gear on the bottom and the flange up?

The RK6 series can be mounted in either direction, provided the axial load applied tends to compress the mounting faces toward each other. This is referred to as being in "compression".

Please refer to the Kaydon Slewing Ring/Turntable Bearings Catalog 390, page 14.

How corrosion resistant are your slewing ring/turntable bearings? Will they stand up to the elements outdoors (ice, snow, water)? Do you offer them in stainless?

The RK6 series bearings are used in outdoor applications such as small cranes and boom lifts, however, if left unprotected they will corrode. If application of paint is not practical, Kaydon can provide them with Endurakote® plating. This is a thin dense chrome plating used to deter corrosion. Manufacture of these bearings from stainless steel would result in loss of load carrying ability. Refer to the Kaydon Slewing Ring/Turntable Bearings Catalog 390, pages 120-121.

What are the recommended shaft and housing dimensions for a preloaded back-to-back set of angular contact bearings?

The general fitup principle for a preloaded set of angular contact bearings is to achieve a light press fit on the races whose inboard faces are up against a shoulder or each other, and to have a slightly loose fit on the races that are clamped to establish the preload.

How are bearing pass frequencies determined?

Kaydon's internal program for identifying bearing pass (defect) frequencies uses the formula published in Tedric Harris's book, "Rolling Bearing Analysis". This requires information on pitch diameter, ball diameter, ball quantity, and contact angle, which are published for the standard product line. This formula based on these parameters would be valid for a Kaydon bearing.

How do I obtain Reali-Design® software?

The software is free and available to download. spacer

Do the seals on the Kaydon slewing ring bearings resist a corrosive environment such as part of a permanent fixture mounted on the deck of a ship?

Kaydon's MT series or RK series slewing ring/turntable bearings both use nitrile rubber seals. The seal itself for the most part can be considered resistant to an atmosphere on the deck of a ship.

These bearings also use seals that are considered face riding seals. They are designed to keep out incidental water contact and contaminates. If a direct hit from water to the seal area is expected, we suggest use of another type of shield or sealing to keep out that direct hit and consider the bearing's seal as the backup.

What is the standard internal clearance of a KB060XP0, Type X Reali-Slim® bearing? How is this measured?

Per the Reali-Slim® bearing catalog Precision Tolerances tables, this is listed at a .002"-.003" diametral clearance. This is the maximum excursion of the inner ring vs the outer ring measured in a radial direction.

spacer

When a Reali-Slim® bearing outer race is fixed, how much deviation can I measure at the bore when rotating the inner race? I am trying to determine how much the axis shifts (not tilt) relative to the axis of the outer race during normal operation.

Under a fixed load condition (unidirectional) the axis shift of the bearing will be due only to radial runout—which is the wall thickness variation between the race path where the balls contact and the bore or O.D. of the bearing. A bearing will always rotate about its own center and this center can vary by the amount of runout of one race only (not both). Whether or not the shaft you place is in that center depends on the fitup. Internal clearance or even loose shaft or housing fits will only cause shifting or movement when the load itself shifts direction or reverses during operation.

spacer

Can you please describe the importance of the 'rotating shaft' and 'stationary shaft' columns in the "Recommended Fits for Reali-Slim® Bearings" section of the Reali-Slim® bearing catalog?

Bearing fits are usually line-line to loose on one member and line-line to tight on the other member. It is preferred to put the tight fit on the rotating member to minimize indexing during operation.
